A pr 2 00 9 Phase Transition in a Vlasov - Boltzmann Binary Mixture

چکیده
There are not many kinetic models where it is possible to prove bifurcation phenomena for any value of the Knudsen number. Here we consider a binary mixture over a line with collisions and long range repulsive interaction between different species. It undergoes a segregation phase transition at sufficiently low temperature. The spatially homogeneous Maxwellian equilibrium corresponding to the mixed phase, minimizing the free energy at high temperature, changes into a maximizer when the temperature goes below a critical value, while non homogeneous minimizers, corresponding to coexisting segregated phases, arise. We prove that they are dynamically stable with respect to the Vlasov-Boltzmann evolution, while the homogeneous equilibrium becomes dynamically unstable.

Hydrodynamics of binary fluid phase segregation.
Starting with the Vlasov-Boltzmann equation for a binary fluid mixture, we derive an equation for the velocity field u when the system is segregated into two phases (at low temperatures) with a sharp interface between them. u satisfies the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations together with a jump boundary condition for the pressure across the interface which, in turn, moves with a velocity gi...

We investigate the well posedness of stationary Vlasov-Boltzmann equations both in the simpler case of linear problem with a space varying force field and a collisional integral satisfying the detailed balanced principle with a non-singular scattering function, and, the non-linear Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system. For the former we obtain existence-uniqueness results for arbitrarily large integr...

A derivation is given of the Boltzmann–Vlasov equation beginning from multiple scattering considerations. The motivation for the discussion, which is purely pedagogical in nature, is the current interest in understanding the origins of transport equations in terms of rigorous field-theory descriptions, or, as in this case, exact nonrelativistic formulations.
متن کاملSharp Interface Motion of a Binary Fluid Mixture
We derive hydrodynamic equations describing the evolution of a binary fluid segregated into two regions, each rich in one species, which are separated (on the macroscopic scale) by a sharp interface. Our starting point is a Vlasov-Boltzmann (VB) equation describing the evolution of the one particle position and velocity distributions, fi(x, v, t), i = 1, 2. The solution of the VB equation is de...

We study the evolution of a two component fluid consisting of “blue” and “red” particles which interact via strong short range (hard core) and weak long range pair potentials. At low temperatures the equilibrium state of the system is one in which there are two coexisting phases. Under suitable choices of space-time scalings and system parameters we first obtain (formally) a mesoscopic kinetic ...
